Reading
Yesterday, I had one of my crazy reading spells. Most of the time, I go to the library and I really don't know what i'm going to read. I just have to pick it out by looking at the display cases or just going to the main cases themselves. Pretty frequently I find good books to read and then there are those special times when I come across wonderful books, just totally by chance. Yesterday I put in Colombia in the subject section because I was trying to look for a movie, but I came across a biography/autobiography of Ingrid Betancourt who was a Colombian presidential candidate kidnapped by the FARC in 2002 and has been held hostage ever since. This book was published right before she was kidnapped. Anyway I went to Barnes and Noble and read a lot, then I came home and watched a DVD about homeless women and then I read the rest of it. It had a lot of technical political stuff in it, but I was able to get through it easily just because I am interested in that subject.
After I finished reading the book, I googled her and found out that Cinemax has put a documentary out about her kidnapping. Guess what???????? The documentary was shown last night from 9-11, right when I was finishing the book and the next showing is 1/22 at 11:50 AM. That is right when I have to be at the airport to go to Mexico! I have no idea what that means...
Today, I hear stuff vaguely on the news about some writer that has fabricated his whole book. Then later on I hear something on NPR about Million Little Pieces and I find out that it is that James Frey. So actually I get kind of mad because I have been wanting to read that book. I am even on the waiting list for it at the library. Then, just now I watched an entire Larry King Live with James Frey. He did make some things up I guess. He basically just totally avoids the question when hes asked about it. But I don't really care. He was a drug addict and he got over it. Thats really awesome. And his mom was there and she was so proud of him.
That brings me to Oprah's bookclub. A lot of the "smart" people seem to have such a problem with that. But you know what? I don't. Remember how I was talking earlier about it is sometimes hard to find books? Thats why I like Oprah's Book Club; it gives me another method to find new books. I'm not going to pretend to like something if I don't.
I wonder if Oprah has The Kite Runner on her list. She should.
A book that is not too famous right now that I just DISCOVERED at the library, but it wonderful is Harbor by Lorraine Adams.
