The Salesians
I returned from my Salesian Lay Missioners orientation last Sunday and let me tell you I was very impressed with the Salesians in general. They are all very friendly and seem genuinely happy to see you. I really enjoyed this retreat MUCH more than I ever enjoyed any Jesuit Volunteer Corps retreat. I'm pretty sure the reason for that is the amount of people. At JVC there are like 40 people there and at the end you are still kind of expected to hug every person goodbye. At this retreat (there were only 5 actual volunteers) I actually wanted to hug everyone goodbye.
I was actually the youngest volunteer at this one (the ages ranged from 54 - 23), but I think that has to do with the retreat being in January which would be more conducive to an adult work schedule rather than a students. The food was really impressive at the retreat and I got to go into New York City and see a Salesian church and school. This church was right next to the place where RENT was filmed and J LO had actually just been in the school gym filming something. I loved being in the school and it made me a little more open to teaching in Catholic Schools. I've always been on the public school kick, but the Salesians have such a cool system for dealing with kids and you can only really do it in a Salesian school. I think you could probably use it on a small scale in a public school.
So, anyway I got home from my SLM retreat and immediately emailed the girl at my placement now. (She's apparently a very good basketball player) As soon as I got an email back from her (the next morning) I got my flight to Mexico City ($275 from Myrtle Beach, which I thought was pretty good.) The Salesians pay you back for your flight after you've finished everything.
SO Sunday January 22nd I will be leaving for Mexico City. I'm excited, also feel like I should be a little more scared.
I've basically been relaxing this whole week and my silent prayers to God that I get no subbing calls at 7:00 in the morning have so far been answered! I should stop that praying though, because as my dad says... $60 is $60.
